Now ever so fabulous, your favorite auntie decided to pen her review of Proteus (2003) (97 min - Rated R in English and Afrikaans with English subtitles) for Wednesday Foreign Movie Night at MGDR. This is a lovely story between 3 men caught in a love triangle in 18th century South Africa. With lavish costumes and torrid love scenes, this is one of Auntie Mamie's favorite gay films from Africa.
Synopsis:
we follow our main characters, a white Dutch sailor Rijkhaart Jacobsz (Neil Sandilands) and his black lover Claas Blank (Rouxnet Brown), as they carry on a secret lover affair in the South African penal system under the watchful and jealous eye of gay botanist Virgil (Shaun Smyth) who has become quite fond of Claas as well.
Although sometimes hard to follow due to the use of current-day costumes and sets intermingling with the 18th century storyline, this interracial love affair is nonetheless one of the most dramatic depiction of homophobia and the unwavering love shared by two people in the face of such hatred and adversity.
Auntie Mamie LOVED Proteus and she thinks you will too after you have added this wonderful period film to your Gay DVD Collection. She gives it an 8.5 out of 10 rainbows.
